Extension Availability
Visitors admitted on a valid B-1/B-2 status may request an extension from USCIS using Form I-539 before their I-94 expires
Duration & Extensions
Extensions are typically granted for up to 6 additional months.
Family Eligibility
Spouses and unmarried children under 21 may request to extend their stay in the U.S. Each dependent must be included on Form I-539 (with Form I-539A for co-applicants).
Processing Time
On average 2–4 months. If your I-94 expires while the application is pending, you may remain in the U.S. until a decision is made
Flexibility
Visitors may continue tourism, medical treatment, or legitimate business activities while awaiting approval, as long as they comply with visa conditions.
When to Apply
It is recommended to apply for a B-1/B-2 extension at least 45 days before your I-94 expires. Filing early helps avoid unlawful presence and ensures you remain in valid status while your application is under review.
